Carlisle's Libraries:
Carlisle Library Association and Carlisle Agricultural Library 1855-1863
Nearly 10 years after the disbandment of the Carlyle Library Association, Mrs. Amanda Reynolds formed a subscription library with a membership of 28 people. The library only lasted a number of years, but we are still in posession of some of its books.
One example is The Cabinet Library Books, a set of 20 volumes. Published in 1855, the series' titles covered general topics such as "European History"," Wonders of Geology", "Curiosities of Human Nature", and "Celebrated Women".
This illustration from "Lives of Benefactors" is typical of the artwork contained in the series.
The Agricultural Library Association 1859-1872
This library shared agricultural reference books and charged a $3 yearly membership fee. Non-members could borrow a book for 10 cents each. We do not have records of the publications it owned, but the library purchased many of Reynolds' books once she retired her library.
Both libraries operated out of members' houses.
