The leather swab bucket is encircled with iron studs around the base; the studs continue up the length of the seam to fasten the ends. At the top of the bucket, only eight studs remain that encircle the top.

A white label with a printed black number "101" is affixed to the surface. The number "1" is painted in white on the surface also. There is a faded streak of red paint on surface.

Beside every cannon, there was always a bucket of water and a mop. Immediately after the cannon fired, a wet mop was used to "swab" the inside of the barrel to put out any remaining sparks. Failure to do so could cause an explosion if sparks from the cannon came in contact with new gunpowder when it was inserted.
