"Gettysburg 1863" is hand carved into the surface. The number "9" is painted in white on one side of the shell below the Gettysburg carving. Another white painted "9" is also on the opposide side. The cone is grooved; the cylinder is hollow.

Conservator found 2 grapeshot and gunpowder within its cavity.
